Jersey Shore

This show has captured my heart. I like to think of myself as being a decently educated American, and while Jersey Shore really is scraping the bottom over the barrel, i am enamored by the culture that lives on this show. The “guido” must be a 21st century invention, just as the “hipster” is. As much as it’s easy to hate on shows like Real World, Jersey Shore, Big Brother, there has to be something that captures the hearts of millions of Americans that keeps these shows running.

I watched the season premiere of the most recent Real World episode, and in it the self proclaimed “nerd” asked when he showed up to the house: “ok so where’s the black guy?” and later asked “so who’s gay?”. It was like the so called “real” people on the show have jumped the shark into realizing that even on their reality show, everyone fits into a bucket, and certain stereotypes are needed for a successful show. It seemed to me that everyone realized they were cast to be a stereotyped representation of a certain segment of the 18-24 year old population, and within an episode, did their best to live up to the sterotype they have were cast for.

I think basically what i am getting at, is that to me at least, we have so far evolved from an actual reality show, that the reality show stars are now just stereotypical representations that appeal to a large segment of teenagers. They understand why they were cast, and do their best to “act” a certain way. So in the end, all we get are D list actors that are doing a bit of improvisation. And with that, we get Jersey Shore. And what does everyone think of the JErsey Shore? Over the top “Guidos” who spray tan and go to the gym all day, and club at night. And that’s what we get, in all its hilarity.
